WELSH PONY SOCIETY GERMANY

Breeders Forum for Welsh Ponies

At the end of 2005, a group of long standing and renowned breeders met for the founding meeting of the Welsh Pony Society Germany. The WPSG began its work as an independent organisation in January 2006. The main task of the WPSG and its members is to promote the breeding of Welsh ponies, section A and B.

Declining figures in Welsh pony breeding and above all, a diminished quality in the breeding stock in Germany has made this step vital. This new forum is not intended as a competitor to the IG Welsh.  On the contrary, the WPSG wants to take appropriate measures in conjunction with the German breeding societies, such as the IG-Welsh, in their efforts to support Welsh pony breeding. Among the measures planned are teaching seminars for young and new breeders. Courses will also be offered to train young and new judges.  Other actions the WPSG will take are: providing an information service via a new website (www.welsh-pony-society.de), biannually producing an information pamphlet (WPSG News), organising shows (Deutschland Cup for Welsh ponies section A and B) and annual stud visits.

WPSG also aims to work actively on the public relations front (on a national as well an international basis) and to foster and strengthen international relations. The founding meeting strongly indicated how important these measures are in order to improve the breeding of Welsh A and B ponies in Germany.

Moorkieker stud since 1966

In the sixties, the German married couple Hinrich and Regina Wulf made their first trips to England and Wales in order to view Welsh B ponies and perhaps buy a stallion and some mares for breeding. At that time, many Germans started to feel enthusiastic about the noble ponies from Wales. They were interested in ponies which were up to height and showed an excellent type at the same time - a combination hard to achieve. So primarily, the first trips of the Wulfs were valuable teaching hours at many studs. It was learned very fast that quality, type and the necessary substance were more important for breeding than the last inches to height. These multiple visits with Lady Seton (Baylaurel), Mrs. Crisp (Kirby Cane), Lady M. Middleton (Chirk), Mr. Edwards (Weston), Lord Kenyon (Gredington), Mrs. Mansfield (Rotherwood), Mrs. Cuff (Downland) and Lieutn. Col. Williams Wynn (Coed Coch) and the also visited Welsh Pony Shows were unforgotten experiences with wonderful Welsh Ponies for the Wulfs. Criban Victor, Coed Coch Berwynfa, Downland Chevalier, Chirk Caradoc, Chirk Crogan and many others were seen and admired. After some weeks driving thousand miles by car across Wales and England, it was rather clear to Hinrich Wulf that he would breed these fantastic ponies!

It was a long way to the present high standard of the ponies of Wulfs Moorkieker stud. Only best bloodlines from the mother country of the Welsh breeding made this success possible. A current example of it is the winning of the championship of the section B at the International Welsh Pony and Cob Show in Belgium 2005 of Moorkieker Gawain (13,2 hands) (judge: Len Bigley). The sire of Moorkieker Gawain is Downland Goldflake (by Downland Chevalier, out of Mere Fire Myth), which Hinrich Wulf had seen as a three days old colt at the Downland stud and which he could purchase from Mrs. Cuff. Gawains dam Belvoir Harebell (by Lechlade Scarlet Pimpernel, out of Belvoir Thalia) left some very good descendants at the Moorkieker stud and established the H-line at the stud. Also Gawains descendants are extremely successful. His daughter Moorkieker Highness for example was exhibited by Hinrich Wulf only at two shows in the year 2005. She became Champion of all three-year-old section B mares and Reserve Champion of all Welsh B age-classes at the National Mare Show of the FN and Supreme Champion at the Welsh Pony and Cob Show at the Verdiana, which is a great equestrian sporting and breeding event.

Hinrich Wulf joined a good friendship with Lieutn. Col. Williams Wynn (Coed Coch) of whom he got his first excellent Welsh B  Ponies. These were - among others - Coed Coch Gawain, Coed Coch Gildas, Coed Coch Meryl II, Coed Coch Emma, Coed Coch Llywy and Coed Coch Llawrig. They formed the basis for a good breeding. The present breeding basis of the Moorkieker stud is formed by the stallions Moorkieker Gulliver (by Moorkieker Gawain, dam by Pendock Plato) and Moorkieker Goethe (by Downland Goldflake, dam by Elphicks Facade). All the broodmares are by Moorkieker Gawain and this is the reason why Gawain could be exported to the Czech Republic.

In the meantime the Moorkieker stud is the oldest active Welsh B stud in Germany and innumerable show and breeding successes testify for the consistent putting into action of the many tips given by friendly breeders from Wales and England.

Hinrich Wulf himself is Life Member of the WPCS since 1971 and is reputed to be an expert for Welsh Ponies not only in Germany. As a judge he has a keen eye for a good Welsh Pony. The accumulated know-how of 42 years Welsh breeding combined with many, many visits of studs and shows in Wales and England made this beautiful success story possible.
